CHICAGO (CBS) – A person is in stable condition after being shot dead on the Eisenhower Expressway early Sunday, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 2:20 a.m., according to the Illinois State Police. All lanes west from Austin Boulevard to Harlem Avenue were closed to investigations at 4:30 a.m.

There have been nearly 200 freeway shootings so far this year, compared with 128 in all of 2020. Illinois State Police would increase the number of evening and night patrols on the freeways last week in response to an increase in the speed of violence the past two years.
