On Friday, Widespread Panic finished her three-night run at the Chicago Theater. During their second set, the Southern Jam titans switched from “Surprise Valley” to their debut version of Leon Russell’s “Stranger in a Strange Land”. From there, the ensemble switched to Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” before returning to “Stranger in a Strange Land” and eventually finishing the extended sequence with the rest of “Surprise Valley”. Russell died five years ago last week and is one of the main themes of the new documentary Learning To Live Together: The Return of Mad Dogs and Englishmen, in which panic drummer Duane Trucks’ brother Derek Trucks stars and a cameo the panic frontman includes John Bell.

The surprises didn’t stop there. During the encore of Panic they released a cover of the Drivin ‘N’ Cryin ‘track “Straight to Hell” for the first time on October 25th, 2015. It was only the second time the group performed the selection

Widespread Panic will open a four-day New Year’s Run at the Fox Theater in Atlanta on December 28th.
