These Are The Counties In The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI Metro Area With The Most COVID-19

Despite ongoing vaccination efforts, new cases of COVID-19 are on the rise in parts of the United States every day. To date, 47,138,600 cases of the virus have been reported nationwide – and that number is growing every day.

A total of 1,225,341 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metropolitan area, which includes parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. When adjusted for the population, there were 12,849 reported infections per 100,000 people in the region – below the national rate of 14,408 cases per 100,000 people.

While Chicago-Naperville-Elgin has fewer COVID-19 infections per capita than the national average, there are parts of the greater metropolitan area where this is not the case.

The greater Chicago area has 14 counties, or county equivalents, which can include independent cities – and of them, Jasper County has the most COVID-19 cases per capita. So far there have been a total of 5,768 infections or 17,244 per 100,000 residents in Jasper County.

Not only does Jasper County have the most COVID-19 infections per capita in the Chicago area, there are more virus-related deaths per capita than the metropolitan area as a whole. Jasper County had a total of 263 coronavirus deaths per 100,000 people, compared to 197 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 for the entire Chicago-Naperville-Elgin area.
