Police are investigating a needle in the handle of a gas station where a man was stabbed in Cook County | State and region

JADE YAN Chicago Tribune

Police are investigating after a man was pierced by a needle attached to a pump trigger at a Cook County gas station Monday.

Shortly after 7 p.m., a man at a Shell gas station near the intersection of 111th Street and Ridgeland Avenue in Chicago Ridge pressed the handle of a gasoline pump nozzle and felt a needle stick in his finger, according to a warning on the Chicago Facebook page Ridge police. At the base of the needle, which had been glued to the trigger of the gas nozzle, the needle contained an “unknown” white powder, it was said.

The man was rushed to hospital and examined, but he did not experience any symptoms of exposure, authorities said.

The Chicago Ridge Police are working with the Illinois State Police Crime Lab to analyze the evidence it has gathered. The police are asking those with information or similar experience to call the Chicago Ridge Police Investigations Division at 708-425-7831.

Rumors and warnings on social media about needles in gas station handles have been circulating for years, with the occasional speculation of HIV infection of the needles. A 2019 analysis by the Poynter Institute’s PolitiFact described the claims as a “year-old hoax.”
