Dead body of missing toddler found in Wheeling, northwest Indiana

The body of a missing toddler from Wheeling was found in a pond in Hammond, Indiana.

A 26-year-old Pinegree Grove man charged with murder in the deaths of a young Wheeling mother and her 1-year-old daughter was charged Tuesday by Wheeling Police Department investigators.

Ahmeel Fowler of Pinegree Grove was arrested last week in Springfield, Missouri, for the murder of Ja’nya Murphy.

Murphy, 21, was found murdered in the Wheeling apartment she shared with her daughter Jacyln “Angel” Dobbs after her family failed to report them.

An autopsy performed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that Murphy died of asphyxiation. Her death has been classified as a homicide.

Angel was later found in a pond in northwest Indiana.

Area construction workers discovered the child’s body in the water near the Kennedy Avenue exit of I-80. They called 911 and then went into the water to retrieve the girl, the police said.

Fowler waived his right to be heard prior to extradition from Missouri.

He is due to appear for a bond hearing on November 24th.
