Pilsen Residents Can Meet With Cook County Assessor To Discuss Recent Property Tax Increase

PILSEN — The Cook County Assessor will meet with Pilsen neighbors next week after residents and community leaders blasted the office for the sharp increase in property taxes this year.

The meeting with Assessor Fritz Kaegi is 6:30 pm Wednesday at Benito Juarez High School, 2150 S. Laflin St.

An analysis from the Cook County Treasurer’s Office showed neighbors in Pilsen, Avondale and Rogers Park — all gentrifying neighborhoods — have been hit hardest by property tax increases. Pilsen neighbors have been speaking out about the issue for weeks, saying the taxes will drive out more long-time homeowners and renters.

Kaegi agreed to meet publicly to address residents’ concerns after a rally inside the Cook County office earlier this month.

Kaegi said his office was committed to working with residents to raise awareness about certain exemptions that would freeze or lower tax increases, like for seniors or homeowners who live in their buildings. He also has said his office is only one that affects property taxes, but he would collaborate with others to ensure the process determining taxes is equitable.
