Teens tapping into nature with summer library programs, and there’s plenty more to come – Chicago Tribune

Local teens have been using crafts to connect with nature as part of Naperville Public Library’s great outdoors theme for its summer reading program, “Read Beyond the Beaten Path.”

They’ve also coupled their passions for science and the environment through the Urban Birds Project, a year-round, citizen-science project developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to collect data on the area avian population.

Over the course of several weeks, teen volunteers have logged the bird populations they’ve observed, which will provide valuable knowledge of how our local ecosystem influences birds in urban areas.

When they aren’t scouring the skies for birds, teens are using their summer camp skills to create crafts in our Teen DIY programs, like Teen DIY: Bee Hotels. Our busy bee participants put their upcycling skills to use as they created bee hotels out of old water bottles and brown paper to create homes for our native pollinators.

Teens can join in more Teen DIY programs planned for the rest of summer.

Some of these programs require advanced registration, which can be done on the library’s website: www.naperville-lib.org.
