Prairie State College Hosts Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the only Dental Hygiene Clinic in South Suburban Cook County (Chicago Heights, IL) – Prairie State College (PSC) hosted a ribbon-cutting . to introduce its newly renovated Dental Hygiene Clinic. Guests from the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society, PSC Board of Trustees, and local elected officials visited the vastly improved facility on September 13 to celebrate the momentous occasion.

“Building a vastly improved dental hygiene clinic is an integral part in achieving our vision for Prairie State College,” PSC President Dr. Michael Anthony said. “The impact the updated facilities will have on our students, faculty, staff and surrounding community is immeasurable. We’re excited to help create better professionals in the dental field while providing excellent care to more people.”

“The newly renovated Prairie State College Dental Hygiene Clinic is state of the art. We provide our students the opportunity to learn dental hygiene with cutting edge technology so after graduation they are well prepared for their new profession,” said Gail Szewczyk, Associate Professor of Dental Hygiene and Community Dental Hygiene Coordinator. “The clinic serves over 900 patients per year and I am happy to say that we, faculty and students, are providing our patients with the most attentive and beneficent care available. We are PSC proud and we are here to serve our community.”

“On behalf of the thousands of patients you have yet to meet, I say thank you to the trustees, to the officials, to the faculty and President Anthony for what you’ve done. This clinic is absolutely beautiful,” said American Dental Association Executive Director Raymond Cohlmia, DDS, during the event. “Congratulations to you all. This is not just a dream come true, but a dream come true for the many people who will receive health care that normally otherwise would not receive health care.”

The ceremony featured a video highlighting the Dental Hygiene program followed by several speakers including PSC President Dr. Michael Anthony, Dr. Ray Cohlmia Executive Director of the American Dental Association, Kathleen Karwoski, PSC Associate Professor, Gail Szewczyk, PSC Associate Professor, Rebecca Buckle, PSC Associate Professor, and Paul Stankiewicz, the son of Virginia Stankiewicz, who played a major role in the founding of PSC’s original Dental Hygiene program on January 19, 1967.

Guests enjoyed food and drinks while being afforded the opportunity to tour the clinic to see the upgrades at the facility which includes 25,550 extra square feet of clinic space.

A list of additions and improvements to the facility is below:

– Radiographs are now completely digital

– All patient records are digital via Eaglesoft software.

– Washer and dryer were added to wash all protective gowns and any towels used in the sterilization room

– Miele, which removes all the debris/contaminants from the instruments before sterilization

– All operators are equipped with computers for patient record keeping, oral cameras and ultrasonics

– Touchless sink outside the operators

– Radiology rooms are equipped will computers and digital receptors for taking radiographs

– Two new autoclaves for sterilization

– One Statim for sterilization

About the Clinic (Patients)

The clinic is open to the public and offers free or deeply discounted fees for all. Dental cleanings start at $8 for children (ages 0-9), $20 for adolescents and adults, $15 for adults age 55 and up. Comprehensive exams are complimentary with dental cleaning. X-rays range from $3-$20. Call 708.709.3707 to schedule an appointment.
