NCC celebrates MLK Day

North Central College is celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK ​​Day) today with several virtual events. These include a virtual teach-in, a virtual lunch, and encouraging campus and local community members to get involved in community service. The motto of this year’s events is “Keep Moving Forward”. King attended North Central College in 1960.

Richard Irvin is running for governor

Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin announced that he will run for governor of Illinois. He’s running as a Republican. Irvin was elected Mayor of Aurora in 2017. He is the city’s first black mayor. The primary is scheduled for June 28, 2022.

Betty White Challenge

Our local animal shelters participate in the Betty White Challenge. The nationwide movement is encouraging people to donate to animal shelters and rescues on their behalf today, starting as little as $5. For details on how you can help the Naperville Area Humane Society, visit their Facebook page. The nonprofit has raised $770 since this shot. Tito’s Handmade Vodka will also retail for up to $1,500. ADOPT Pet Shelter has received $800 in donations through the shelter’s website so far. Today would have been White’s 100th birthday.

Former Lt. Governor for DuPage Clerk

Former Illinois Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti announced that she will run for the DuPage County Clerk. The former Wheaton councilwoman is running as a Republican. She was lieutenant governor when former state governor Bruce Rauner was in office. This role made her the first Latina nationwide to hold the position.

White House ornaments

A resident of Monarch Landing displays her 40 White House ornaments. Lois Morgan has the entire collection, with Presidents displayed chronologically. The program, which began in 1981, is designed to be educational and to raise funds for the White House Historical Association. Morgan started buying the ornaments in the ’90s and the rest was passed on to her. The gallery in the retirement home changes monthly.
