After a Friday sit-in at The Terrapin Beer Company in Athens, Ga., Mike Campbell joined Gov’t Mule again on Saturday night. This time, the ensemble popped up at the Capitol City Amphitheater in Tallahassee, Fla., where they delivered a set of music that included a bluesy first-time take on “Born In Chicago,” featuring the evening’s guest, who accompanied Warren Haynes on the guitar-heavy display.
To kick off their appearance in the Sunshine State, Gov’t Mule began their set with the original “Stone Cold Rage” from their 2017 studio album, Revolution Come… Revolution Go before continuing with a run-through of the LP’s title track. Then, the group turned to their 2013 repertoire on “Whisper In Your Soul” before dipping further back in time on “Fools Moon.”
The single-set display continued with a track off 1998’s Dose with “Birth of the Mule.” Next, they returned to their Revolution Come… Revolution Go collection with “Thorns of Life,” which came before the on-stage arrival of the night’s guest. Campbell appeared next, taking the stage beside Haynes and ripping into a bluesy, first-time performance of “Born In Chicago.”
Campbell stuck around for one other tune. This time the ensemble referenced back to their guest’s extensive time as a member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, landing on the fan favorite and cover, “Breakdown,” to conclude their sit-in. After Campbell left the stage, Gov’t Mule continued with a bombastic display as they blended a collection of songs and jams into one packed set ender, which featured elements of “Trane,” “Rumble,” “Sex Machine,” a “St . Stephen” jam and much more.
For Saturday’s encore, Gov’t Mule returned to the stage for one final tune. The group landed on a cover of The Allman Brothers Band, with the classic number “Soulshine,” which referenced back to Haynes’ history alongside the legendary band. After the musicians busy weekend, they will continue their fall tour in Durham, NC, on Tuesday night. For tickets, see the band’s official website.
