Man found dead on Greenwood Avenue near Dempster in Niles

Niles Police opened a death investigation after an unidentified man was found dead on Greenwood Avenue near Dempster Street the night before Thanksgiving.

Police said an officer was patrolling a shopping mall parking lot near the 8800 block of Greenwood when he heard a loud noise at 9:37 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24, and hit a 2013 Honda minivan The body of a man lying on the road met the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The camera footage of the squad car dashboard checked after the incident showed that the man was already on the street before the minivan hit him.

The Cook County coroner ruled the death was an accident caused by multiple injuries in a traffic accident. Forensic medicine has set the incident for Wednesday at 9:37 p.m. and the time of death at 9:38 p.m.

Niles police said the 49-year-old Niles man who drove the minivan stayed on site after the accident, worked with investigators and showed no sign of impairment.

The deceased has yet to be identified. Police said the incident was still an open investigation with the assistance of the Major Crash Assistance Team of the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force.

Niles’ deputy police chief Nick Zakula said Friday the incident is still under investigation and, “If updates are available, we will make them public.”
