Chicago’s First Snowflakes Of The Season Came Monday — But It’ll Be In The 70s This Weekend

CHICAGO — The first snowflakes of the season fell Monday morning in Chicago.

There was a “brief shower” about 6:30 am, according to the National Weather Service. And a “burst of snow” is expected over the city during the day, though there will be little to no accumulation in Chicago, according to the weather agency.

Chicago typically gets its first trace of snow — meaning less than .1 inches — Oct. 31, although snowflakes were observed as early as Sept. 25 in 1928 and 1942, according to National Weather Service records.

The city typically starts getting measurable snow — meaning .1 inches or more — around Nov. 18, and 1 inch of snow or more around Dec. 7.

Monday’s expected to see light snow showers mixed with rain, especially after 3 pm, according to the National Weather Service. The day will be mostly cloudy and breezy, with wind gusts up to 35 mph.

It’s only expected to get as warm as 41 degrees Monday, and temperatures will drop to 35 degrees overnight.

The rest of the week will also see chillier weather — though temperatures will heat up toward the weekend.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny but breezy, with wind gusts up to 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service. It’ll have a high temperature of 47 degrees.

Thursday will warm up to 54 degrees, and the day will be partly sunny, according to the weather agency.

Friday is expected to hit 65 degrees and be mostly sunny, while Saturday will see similarly sunny skies and a high of 69 degrees.

The warmest day of the week is expected to be Sunday, with a high of about 72 degrees and partly sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service.
