Chicago sets new tourism record in 2018

Chicago continues to attract more tourists from the US and abroad, setting a new record in 2018.

The city hosted more than 57.6 million visitors last year, up 4.3 percent from 2017, according to city tourism organization Choose Chicago. Last year’s figures mark the eighth straight year for a new record, according to Choose Chicago data.

The 4.3 percent growth was an increase over 2.7 percent in 2017. “It’s encouraging to not only see growth, but to see the pace of growth increase,” David Whitaker, president and CEO of Choose Chicago, said in a statement.

The continued momentum is estimated to have increased tourism-related employment in the city by 1.2 percent, hitting a new high of 150,616 jobs in 2018.

Although domestic visits increased the most since 2015, overseas tourism to Chicago fell short of last year’s growth rate. Tourism from in the US grew 4.4 percent, up from 2.7 percent in 2017. Overseas tourism grew by 2.9 percent, behind 2017 growth of 4.8 percent.
