Now we’ve outdone ourselves, ”said Chicago Mayor Lori E. This success is testament to all of the companies that contribute to Chicago’s world-class tourism and hospitality offerings, and to the individuals who work quietly to provide entertainment and attractions that captivate seasoned travelers and residents. Five years in a row is an honor and a high bar, and I couldn’t be more impressed with what our city has achieved. “
It is true testimony to the determination and enthusiasm of Chicago’s tourism and hospitality industries in the face of unprecedented challenges over the past year and a half, making Condé Nast Traveler readers Chicago the best big city in the United States for a fifth year in a row . Businesses, organizations, and residents across the city gathered to make sure the city is ready and safe to welcome visitors to Chicago, whether it’s updating infrastructure, processes, or innovating creative offerings. Chicago’s entire tourism and hospitality industries were involved, even the Shedd Aquarium penguins took part in excursions to various aquarium galleries and museums across the city. Based on feedback from Condé Nast Traveler readers, these exceptional efforts were not only well received but also greatly appreciated by visitors.
“Today the Chicagoans are recognizing this achievement and the reopening of theaters and live performances with a celebration at Broadway In Chicago’s CIBC Theater.” said James Meyer, Interim CEO of Choose Chicago. “We’re excited to have civil society, community, and hospitality leaders, as well as Choose Chicago’s many partners who have contributed to this success, come together for an exciting program of special guests such as the RENT cast. This honor is shared by all of Chicago, every neighborhood, every attraction and even our penguin friends at Shedd Aquarium take part in the celebration. “
“This award is a historic award for Chicago, and the Shedd Aquarium prides itself on being instrumental in what makes this city unique.” said Dr. Bridget Coughlin, President and CEO of Shedd Aquarium. “As a cultural organization that happily welcomes nearly two million guests each year, we know that tourism is an important recreational route for Chicago and its communities. We are humble that the videos of Shedd penguin enrichment excursions at the height of the pandemic spread more than joy around the world – they put Chicago at the center of a critical time and sparked an ongoing healing for all. “
“May today’s announcement remind us that we live and work in one of the best cities in the world.” said Michael Fassnacht, President and CEO, World Business Chicago, Chief Marketing Officer, City of Chicago. “Although the last 18 months have been very challenging, we must not forget that in the history of our city we have repeatedly overcome crises and built them up better and stronger each time. Thank you to Condé Nast Traveler readers for validating that Chicago is an incredible city to live, work and visit; Our economic recovery is strong and getting stronger, we are returning to personal events, live theater, conventions and galas; and the best days in our city lie ahead of us. “
The pandemic also provided Chicago with an opportunity to evaluate opportunities to further improve the visitor experience for tourists and businesses. In September, Choose Chicago announced the launch of a new AI-powered chatbot, The Bean, designed to answer visitor questions, including restaurants, upcoming events, and generally act as an online ambassador for the city of Chicago. With the help of this new tool, all of Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods can be easily explored by first-time and repeat visitors to the city.
