With the slow countdown until the start of training camp, we are counting down the Chicago Bears roster from 90 all the way down to number one overall. This will be looking at how each player could potentially impact the roster.

We started at 90 and worked down to number 63 overall.

Chicago Bears 2022 roster ranking: No. 63 Jake Tonges

Jake Tonges is a rookie UDFA from California. He started the past three seasons but saw the majority of his receiving production last season. While he is not an elite receiving tight end, he does have a more versatile skill set and is a better blocker than some others coming out.

Tonges did not get an NFL combine invite but did have a strong showing athletically at his per day. The good thing that Tonges has going for him as a UDFA is signing with the Chicago Bears.

While the Bears have Cole Kmet and signed two tight ends in Ryan Griffin, and James O’Shaughnessy there is not much depth that. With Khari Blasingame as a full back, they may only want to keep three tight ends and a full back. Still, if they keep a fourth, it could be Tonges.

Even if they do not, it does put Tonges in contention to be a practice squad candidate. Griffin and O’Shaughnessy are nice for now in that they can fill out the depth chart with respectable talent, but there is not upside or a long-term solution here.

The Bears added Jake Tonges, and Chase Allen as UDFAs, and those seem to be the first tight ends that Ryan Poles is investing in on the developmental track. Both could be prime practice squad candidates with the possibility to make the final roster with a good training camp.

That puts Jake Tonges into the top 65 players on our list.
