Women’s Swimming & Diving: Scots Repeat as Ahlman Invite Champs

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women’s swimming and diving team hosted the annual Roger Ahlman Invitational Friday and Saturday at Riley Pool and placed first in the team standings for the second year in a row. The Scots scored 813 points to win the nine-team meet, with St. Catherine taking second with 749 points.

On Friday, Macalester broke two school records in the relays. The foursome of first year Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith), first year Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), sophomore Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and junior Jocelyn Radke ( Indianapolis, Ind.) placed second in the 400-yard medley relay with a school-record time of 3:59.58, topping the old record of 4:02.43 set at last year’s MIAC Championships. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Henry, Pollock, sophomore Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and senior Grace Madigan (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) won with a time of 7:58.29. breaking the old mark of 8:00.09 set in 2006.

Radke earned the Scots’ lone individual victory on Friday, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 24.65. Sophomore Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School) finished third in 24.89, followed by sophomore Anna Rakowski (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) in fourth (24.98). Chapon also took fourth in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:14.29.

Saturday’s competition was highlighted by an individual school record by Henry, who took second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.26. The old record of 2:08.56 was set last year by sophomore teammate Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy), who placed third behind Henry. Also on Saturday, Madigan won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.96, Uhlhorn-Thornton took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.50, Merkadeau finished first in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.23, and Pollock won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.40. The Scots’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Merkadeau, Henry, Rakowski and Radke won with a time of 1:38.80.

In the diving events, sophomore Kate Yehle (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) took second on the 3-meter board (334.10) and placed third on the 1-meter board (342.75). In addition to her school record, Henry finished fourth in both the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke, with Wray-Raabolle finishing second in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.14. Chapon was second in the 400-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100 freestyle, with Radke taking third in the 100 freestyle. Uhlhorn-Thornton turned in a second-place performance in the 200-yard breaststroke, while first year Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and sophomore Olivia Johnson (Miwaukee, Wis./Shorewood) finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200 butterflies, respectively.

This is the final competition of 2022 for Macalester, which will return to competition in January.
