Woman Struck by CTA Bus to Receive $20M Settlement | Chicago News

A Chicago woman who was seriously injured after being struck and dragged by a CTA bus in Streeterville has agreed to a $20 million settlement.

Attorneys for 59-year-old Diane Schachner announced the settlement Friday, more than three years after Schachner suffered serious leg injuries when she was dragged nearly 30 feet by the bus.

“Diane’s life has been upended by this incident,” her attorney Patrick Salvi said in a statement. “While she has worked hard towards recovery, she will never regain anything close to her physical capabilities pre-injury.”

The incident occurred Aug. 2, 2019, as Schachner was walking toward the intersection of Fairbanks Court and Ontario Street.

According to her attorneys, as she crossed the intersection, a CTA bus turned left and the driver failed to see her.

Schachner was hit and knocked to the ground by the bus, which then dragged her for 27 feet before it came to a stop on her right leg, her attorneys said. She was then trapped under the bus for nearly 30 minutes until rescue personnel were able to free her.

Schachner’s attorneys said she suffered a fractured ankle and “a severe crush and degloving injury” that required multiple medical procedures.

On Friday, the CTA approved the $20 million settlement the parties had reached during a December 2022 mediation.

“We are pleased that we have achieved this result on behalf of a wonderful client,” Salvi said, “who has demonstrated immense courage and resilience in the face of a life-aging event.”
