Winter weather warning, freezing rain leads to slippery road conditions – NBC Chicago

Although most of Chicago saw sunshine on Saturday morning, the clouds are expected to move quickly and bring with them a wintry mix of conditions.

As if the frosty weather wasn’t enough, icy drizzle is expected at times, leading to potentially dangerous road conditions.

Drizzle and light rain will hit the entire region in the afternoon through evening, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

A winter weather warning was issued on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. for DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall and LaSalle counties and parts of Cook and Will counties in Illinois, the NWS said. The advice also includes Jasper, Lake, Newton, and Porter counties in northwest Indiana.

In freezing temperatures, drizzle is likely to make for icy conditions, especially on sidewalks, parking lots, bridges, overpasses, and back roads.

While evening air temperatures are set to rise above freezing – likely well into the lower to mid 30s – ground and pavement temperatures may not rise as quickly, leading to icy conditions in untreated areas, forecasters said.

Drivers are encouraged to allow additional driving time, check conditions before driving, and slow down while driving.

Once the weather system comes out, the Chicago area will have another day with temperatures well below average.

On Monday, teenage highs and early morning snow showers will again be possible. On Tuesday, a slight warming is expected until the upper 20s with mostly sunny skies.

According to the latest weather models, temperatures should reach the 30 mark with plenty of sunshine by Wednesday and Thursday.
