COLLINSVILLE — A District 11 Illinois State Police (ISP) trooper avoided serious injury early Wednesday morning in Madison County.

According to the ISP, at about 1:02 am Wednesday a trooper was investigating a traffic crash on Interstate 270 westbound at milepost 0.5 in Madison County. His squad car was stationary, with emergency lights activated, when a truck tractor semi-trailer failed to yield to the trooper’s vehicle.

The trooper was able to jump out of the way of the truck, according to the ISP, and sustained minor abrasions. The truck continued traveling west on I-270. Another trooper in the area was able to stop the driver and issue the driver a citation for a violating Scott’s Law – Improper Passing of an Emergency Vehicle.

The accident was the 19th Scott’s Law violation involving an ISP squad car this year. Less than two hours earlier, an ISP District Chicago trooper was conducting traffic control for a crash on Interstate 90 in Cook County with emergency lights activated in the far-right lane when a 2008 black Mazda struck the rear of the squad car. Neither the driver nor the trooper were injured in the crash.

ISP is reminding the public that the Move Over Law, also known as the “Scott’s Law,” requires drivers approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with emergency or hazard lights activated to slow down and move over. A person who violates Scott’s Law faces a fine of $250 to $10,000. If the violation results in injury to another person, the violator’s driver’s license will be suspended for six months to two years.
