NAPERVILLE, IL – The Edgewood College Eagles men’s basketball squad headed down south for their first of two road matchups in the final week of 2022 Wednesday evening. They competed with North Central. The Eagles (1-10) hung tough with the Cardinals (7-5), but precise three-point shooting gave North Central an 80-71 victory over Edgewood College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

– Trey Traeder dominated the first five minutes of the game, going 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and tackling on a jumper to have the Eagles up 17-8 with 14:56 left to play in the half. An 11-2 Cardinals run would tie the game up at 19 all with just over 10 minutes remaining.

– The two teams would keep pace with one another for the rest of the half, the only multi-score lead coming to North Central at 1:34 after a 6-2 run to take a 37-32 lead. A Jake Schroekenthaler fast break jumper would send the teams to the locker room with the Cardinals holding a 37-34 edge.

– North Central’s bench recorded 14 points in the first half to Edgewood College’s three, while the Cardinals had the edge in points off turnovers 12-6.

– The Eagles attacked the paint early in the second half, retaking the lead 40-38 at 18:24 with a 6-1 rally. Threes would quickly swing momentum in North Central’s favor as they grabbed a 7-0 run to take a 45-40 advantage at 17:03. The squads would continue to wrestle for control of the game, with a three-pointer from Danny Mulcare at 11:58 bringing Edgewood College back into a tie at 50-50.

– The two would continue to keep pace with one another, but a pair of threes from the Cardinals would put them ahead of the Eagles 63-57 at 7:14. Edgewood College would never see the lead again. Their best opportunity came at 4:50 after closing within 65-63, but another North Central three pointer at 4:33 would dash the Eagles’ momentum and the Cardinals would not lead by less than five points for the rest of the game.

– Schroeckenthaler finished with 29 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double. Traeder had 16 points, while Caden Nelson netted 13 assists and seven points.
