“The Unexpected Turn of Events: Inside Elisa Stephanik as a Trump Defender”

In the wake of the 2018 midterms, Elise Stefanik was sick of commuting to Washington from upstate New York and weary of dialing for campaign dollars.

Ms. Stefanik had crafted her brand as a model moderate millennial, but it was becoming painfully clear that she was the future of a Republican Party that no longer existed.

A little more than few years ago, Elise Stefanik was just another young Republican representative from upstate New York. She was largely unknown and unremarkable. But in the past years, Stefanik has transformed herself into one of Donald Trump’s most ardent defenders on Capitol Hill-and one of his biggest sycophants. In doing so, she has also become one of the most controversial members of Congress. Elise Stefanik is quickly becoming known as “Trump’s girl” on Capitol Hill. And while her constituents back home may not appreciate her newfound allegiance to The Donald, it seems that her colleagues in Congress are more than happy to take advantage of her unquestioning support.

The party was now firmly controlled by Donald J. Trump, a populist president she didn’t like or respect — a “whack job,” as she once described him in a message obtained by The New York Times. The Republican Party had been strengthened and controlled by Donald J. Trump, a political candidate that few expected to become leader of the powerful United States of America. The President represented an ideology that was hostile to her traditional values system, something she would strongly oppose for much of his term. In a leaked text message to confidantes finally revealed in The New York Times, she candidly called him ‘a whack job’ in scathing aggression.

Donald J. Trump had firmly grabbed control of the party, a president whom she didn’t appreciate or even regard highly. She even called him a “whack job” in a text time exposed in one of The New York Times’ public stories. Her sentiments resonated with many; as his divisive policies were seen by many as unconstructive, making hardly anyone prize him or regulate ardently to showing approval to anything he said during his times in office. Put basically, being opposed to Donald J. Trump was quite natural for her and majority of the public, rooted primarily by her opinions on him that couldn’t help but manifest its way into any direct contact she had with him.

With breathtaking speed and alacrity, Ms. Stefanik remade herself into a fervent Trump apologist, adopted his over-torqued style on Twitter and embraced the conspiracy theories that animate his base… In the process, she has rocketed from the backbench to…presiding over [House Republicans’] overall messaging.

Elise Stefanik is a perfect example of how the Republican Party has changed since Donald Trump became president. She went from being a moderate to becoming a fervent Trump apologist in order to stay relevant in the party. It’s clear that the Republican Party is now controlled by Trump and his supporters, and anyone who wants to remain part of it must cower to his demands.
