The Naperville Park District was recognized by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) with the Best Green Practices Award in the nationwide “Best of the Best” competition in 2021. The winners of the various categories were announced at the IAPD awards ceremony on October 15th.
The Naperville Park District was one of three park districts to receive the Best Green Practices Award. The others were Northbrook Park District and the Park District of Oak Park.
“One of our core values is environmental stewardship,” said Executive Director Ray McGury. “This award speaks well for our community and the progress we have made as a district and in partnership with others to maintain a healthy environment for all.”
The Best Green Practices Award recognizes the Naperville Park District for a number of green initiatives. In recent years, the district has added more than 20 acres of natural areas, restored coastlines, turned lawns into meadows, and increased native vegetation where possible. Many people in the community have joined the district in its green initiatives by recycling Christmas lights, composting Halloween pumpkins, volunteering for park maintenance projects, and attending the annual Earth Day Fair. The district’s annual sustainability report tracks annual progress in energy efficiency, green purchasing practices, recycling, water quality and rainwater management – all of which help protect the environment for future generations.
