Music, movies and more at Wheaton Public Library

Wheaton Public Library, 225 N. Cross St., offers a variety of programs in January, including a program on “The Chicago Freedom Movement” exhibit; a Living Room Conversation; and a concert with the Donna Herula Trio. To register for these events, please visit wheatonlibrary.org/calendar.

Living Room Conversation

The next Living Room Conversation will have the theme, “More Curious, Less Furious” from 7 to 8 pm Monday, Jan 9, via Zoom.

Research shows that curiosity which seeks multiple perspectives can open the mind, increase empathy, reduce fears, encourage self-awareness and promote humility. It is provided in partnership with the Wheaton League of Women Voters.

This program is provided in the Zoom format so that you may better engage and interact with other participants.

MLK’S Chicago Freedom Movement

Prepare to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day with photographer Bernard Kleina, whose rare and historic color photography exhibit, “The Chicago Freedom Movement,” is on display during January in the library’s Arts & Culture Center.

The program will begin at 7 pm Thursday, Jan. 12, in the library’s Meeting Room A.

It is offered in partnership with the City of Wheaton Community Relations Commission and Wheaton League of Women Voters. Registration is required.

Concert

The Donna Herula Trio will perform at 2 pm Sunday, Jan. 15, in the library’s Meeting Room A.

Singer, songwriter, and Chicago Blues Hall of Fame inductee Donna Herula is joined by Tony Wittrock (guitar, mandolin, banjo) and Marc Gemstone (upright bass) for an afternoon of blues and roots music. No registration is required.

SCORE round table

The SCORE Business Roundtable will present “Do You Have What It Takes to Start and Run a Business?” from 10 to 11:30 on Tuesday, Jan 17.

An entrepreneur starts with a dream to turn an idea into a thriving venture that meets your vision and satisfies your financial and lifestyle needs. Facilitated by SCORE Master Mentor Tom Drouin, join your peers for a discussion to explore the issues that are the cornerstones of a successful business startup. Register in advance for this virtual Zoom meeting.

Organizing Closets and Kitchens

Keeping order in these clutter hot spots can be overwhelming. Jennifer Barnes of JB Organizing will identify major roadblocks, provide key principles, and give specific strategies to organize and maintain your closets and kitchen. “Organizing Closets and Kitchens” will be offered at 7 pm Wednesday, Jan. 18, both online and in-person. Uptown Girls to Downton Abbey

In the late 19th Century, cash-strapped British aristocrats shifted from hunting foxes and pheasants to wealthy American socialites. During the Gilded Age, these heiresses traded their family’s money for titles and status but often received a chilly reception.

Fans of “Downton Abbey” and other period dramas will delight as Anglophile and former UK resident Claire Evans recounts tales of the famous American heiresses who saved many aristocratic British households, including close relatives of Winston Churchill and Princess Diana.

She’ll also give travel tips if you’d like to create a Gilded Age tour for yourself during “Uptown Girls to Downton Abbey” from 6:30 to 7:30 pm Monday, Jan. 23, online.

IgniteUniversity

The Ignite University will offer “So You Want to Start a Business: Things to Consider Before Quitting Your Day Job” from noon to 1 pm Tuesday, Jan. 24.

For new entrepreneurs and those who are considering starting a business, this lunch-and-learn will provide an overview of things to think of before pulling the trigger.

Don’t quit your day job until you attend this class, featuring a panel of experienced entrepreneurs from the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce.

It will cover everything from opening a business bank account to understanding the difference between a C Corporation and an individual proprietorship. Registration is required.

Blood drive

Versiti Blood Center of Illinois will be holding a blood drive from 1 to 7 pm Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the Arts & Culture Center on the main floor. To make an appointment, visit wheatonlibrary.org. Appointments will be honored first, but walk-ins are welcome. Photo ID is required. Career workshops

Are there any interview questions that puzzle and annoy you or seem intrusive? Anna Marie MacDonald, manager of the Goodwill Workforce Connection Center, will discuss how to answer behavioral interview question with ease to sell your brand and land the job in “Career Workshop: Behavioral Interview Questions.” It will be 10 to 11:30 am Thursday, Jan. 26. Registration is required.

Mobile DMV

The Secretary of State’s Mobile Express Unit will offer limited services, including driver’s license/state ID card renewal, replacement, and correction, vehicle sticker sales, and more from 10 am to 2 pm Monday, Jan. 30, in Meeting Room A. Visit the Illinois Secretary of State website for fees and required documentation. Acceptable forms of payment include personal checks, cashier’s checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover credit cards, and debit cards. Cash is not accepted. Real ID applications and driver’s tests will not be administered.

The Wheaton League of Women Voters will be available to register voters.

Movie time

The library offers movie screenings twice a month.

On Friday, Jan. 6, the 2022 movie “Adeline” will be shown from 1:30 to 4 pm in Meeting Room A. Based on true events, a community’s belief in a therapy horse with reported abilities to heal people is tested when she is injured while saving residents during a tornado.

On Friday, Jan. 27, it will be the 2022 movie “Downton Abbey: A New Era” from 1:30 to 4 pm in Meeting Room A.

The Crawley family and Downton staff host a film production and journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa.
