Family and friends seek answers after young mother is killed in Chicago car crash – NBC Chicago
Family and friends held a vigil Friday night to remember a young mother who was killed in a car accident on the south side of Chicago last weekend.
As the police announced, the driver of her car escaped from the crime scene.
Harayna Tolbert, 31, celebrated her birthday. The family said they dropped a friend off and should go home, but they never brought it back.
Those who knew Tolbert said she didn’t deserve to die like this.
“She was a great person. She was wonderful. She was nice to everyone. She was the life of the party. She had a good heart, ”said her friend Aleha Miller. “Everyone loved Rayna. No matter who came into contact with Rayna, they loved her. “
The mother of three was a passenger in her car when police reported it crashed into a bridge support near 79th Street and Normal. The driver of the car fled the scene, the police said.
“Chicago has all of these cameras, no one has seen anything,” Miller said. “She should have been alone, so this is a whole other mystery, how where was she? Who was with her. “
Two days after her death, the family said no one had been notified. They thought she was missing and even filed a complaint with the police.
“We basically did our own investigation, called all the hospitals, called the police stations,” she said. “We didn’t get any answers.”
The family called a tow company and learned that their car had been towed because of the accident. The tow company told her family that they recovered the vehicle near 78th Street and Wallace. A call to the coroner confirmed that her body was in the morgue.
“Just knowing that she was there alone, like she was just a nobody, like you hadn’t contacted anyone – that’s just wrong,” Miller said. “She had ID with her.”
Family and friends remembered Tolbert as caring. The mother of three was a hard worker. But what happened to her and who she was with in the last moments of her life remains a mystery.
“How can you just leave someone like that? You have no heart, ”said Miller. “This lady has three children. She has a mother. She has a whole family like it’s heartless. That is heartless. “
The family said they had no idea who the driver might be. The Chicago police are investigating the accident further.
NBC 5 has reached out to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office for a comment on the notification and has not received any feedback.
