LEXINGTON, Va. — Washington and Lee Michael F. Walsh Athletics Director Jan Hathorn has announced the appointment of Michael Connolly as the next assistant women’s tennis coach.
Connolly joins 10th year head coach Erin Ness on the women’s tennis coaching staff after spending the last year and a half as a graduate assistant tennis coach at North Central College. During his time at North Central, he served as the recruitment coordinator, assisted with training planning and drills, managed and created content for the men’s and women’s tennis teams’ social media accounts, and helped manage both teams’ budgets.
He also helped the men’s and women’s tennis teams to an overall record of 39-12 and helped the women’s team win the program’s first and second College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championships in the spring and fall of 2021. As a result , North Central women’s tennis made its first NCAA tournament appearance in program history.
While visiting North Central in Naperville, Illinois, Connolly also served time as a tennis pro at Naperville Tennis Club and Ruth Lake Country Club. At the Naperville Tennis Club, Connolly helped sign up new members, provided coaching to groups and individuals, and helped with marketing. At the Ruth Lake Tennis Club, Connolly supervised weekly tennis classes, maintained four clay courts with brushing, watering and covering, and provided general maintenance for racquet equipment.
Connolly earned his Bachelor of Arts in both business administration and marketing from Illinois College while also captaining the Blueboys men’s tennis team for four years. Connolly finished his career with the most doubles wins in program history and the third most singles wins in program history, and he also helped the team set a program record for wins in a single season in 2019.
Connolly is currently pursuing his Masters in Sports Leadership from North Central.
