The U.S. Marshals Service has concluded Operation North Star II (ONS II), a high-impact fugitive apprehension initiative focused on tackling violent crimes in 10 cities that have a significant number of shootings and homicides.

The initiative lasted 30 days and resulted in the arrest of 833 of fugitives, violent criminals, sex offenders and self-identified gang members in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Buffalo, New York; Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Jackson, Mississippi; Kansas City, Missouri; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Oakland, California; and Puerto Rico.

ONS II focused on suspects wanted in connection with the most serious, violent and dangerous crimes, including homicide and sexual assaults forcibly compelled, robbery, or assault that is aggravated. ONS II investigators prioritized their efforts to target those who used firearms during their crimes, or who had risks associated with violence.

“The results of this operation should make clear that the Justice Department and our partners across the country will stop at nothing to find and bring to justice those responsible for violent crime,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “The U.S. Marshals Service, and the entire Justice Department, will continue to collaborate with community leaders and law enforcement professionals nationwide to protect our communities.”

“The U.S. Marshals Service remains steadfast in its commitment to assisting law enforcement as well as community leaders of all levels to fight violent crime,” stated Director Ronald Davis of the U.S. Marshals Service. “The achievement of ONS II is based on its focus on the most significant factors that cause violence. We are confident that apprehending these criminals will bring some degree of justice to their victims. It will aid in the overall efforts to reduce violence in every city, and hopefully bring a level of justice for their victims.”

Throughout the month of January, the U.S. Marshals Service used its broad arrest authority and network of task forces to arrest individuals wanted on charges, including 95 for homicide and 68 on sexual assault. Investigators also confiscated 181 firearms and more than $229,000 worth of currency and more than 160 kilograms of illegal narcotics.

Notable arrests include:

Walter Abbott was arrested on Jan. 18 in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, by members of the Southwest Fugitive Task Force. Abbott was wanted in Sandoval County, New Mexico, for first-degree attempted homicide and aggravated burglary with an armed weapon that was deadly.

Paris Jackson was arrested on Jan. 31 in Buffalo, New York, by members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. Jackson was wanted in Buffalo for second-degree criminal in possession of a firearm as well as for shooting at a police officer.

Gregory Kalvitz and Jessica Downing were detained on Jan. 20 in Cleveland by members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. The two were wanted in Henry County, Ohio, for interfering with the custody warrant following the abduction of an 8-year-old girl before fled.

Jermaine Westbrook was detained in January. 26 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, by personnel of the U.S. Marshals Service Southern District of West Virginia, with assistance from members of the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team. Westbrook was wanted in Franklin County, Ohio, for murder, felony assault, and parole violation.

Richard Nichols was arrested on Jan. 30 in Albion, Michigan, by members of the Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team. Nichols was wanted by the Michigan State Police for assault with the intent of murder.

Gerard Parker was arrested on Jan. 26 in Harrison County, Mississippi, by members of the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Parker was wanted in New Orleans for third-degree sexual assault and parole violations.

Aaron Payne was arrested on Jan. 18 in Kansas City, Missouri, by members of the Missouri Violent Fugitive Task Force. Payne was wanted in Tarrant County, Texas, for criminal assault strangulation.

Antonio Jenkins was arrested on Jan. 13 in West Allis, Wisconsin, by members of the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. Jenkins was wanted in Milwaukee for numerous charges including first-degree reckless endangering safety, felon in possession of a firearm, battery, and sale/possess/use/transport of a machine gun.

Michael Nguyen was arrested on Jan. 11 in Oakland, California, by members of the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force. Nguyen was wanted in Oakland for possession of weapons that were illegal as well as manufacturing weapons in violation of law and for firing firearms.

Edwin Padilla-Lopez was detained on Feb. 3 in Carolina, Puerto Rico, by members of the Puerto Rico Violent Offender Task Force and Puerto Rico Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. Padilla-Lopez was wanted in District of Puerto Rico for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances within the municipalities of Caguas, Cidra, and Aguas Buenas.

The concept of interagency law enforcement operations such as ONS II evolved largely from regional and district task forces. Since the 1980s, the U.S. Marshals Service has combined their resources and expertise with local, state, as well as federal agencies in order to locate and apprehend dangerous fugitives.

After (yes, should have researched previously) placing an order with an online retailer called Range USA (rangeusa.com), and finding it was never shipped, we checked their BBB rating. It wasn’t good. We are not alone in our experience, apparently.

Here’s a rundown: I ordered a product from their website, and after no response for 10 days, I sent sent an email for order status. They responded saying “There was a error in our system that allowed the pricing to be off. We will be refunding this order.” That’s the second time for me they didn’t honor their advertised price. False advertising should be illegal.

I’m an Honorably discharged disabled war veteran and I decided to purchase a firearm so I went to Range USA on 10/13/2022 upon my first visit the representatives were very nice and I placed the firearm on layaway, but upon my second visit to make my final payment on 11/09/2022 everything went south upon my arrival there was greeting or any acknowledgement of my present for 20 minutes and while waiting for some type of assistance several other customers came in and without hesitation they were greeted and helped so with the long standing period I decided to sit on the floor with my coffee as a form of protest for their rudeness and humiliation towards me, upon me seating down I noticed one of the employees radioed for additional assistance which I thought to assist me but it was to watch me in case I act up or get out of hand. And then finally after another 15 minutes finally some one conjured up some nerves to ask me if I needed any help and I said yes I’m here to get my layaway out which I got it out and upon returning home I called corporate office and reported the incident to Holly and she said she said she would call me back within the hour which was yesterday and no call and even today no call the reason for this review is as veteran may I state a black veteran I was harmed and humiliated how I was treated so I will not patronize that business anymore even if I got to drive 50 miles at least it should a better experience than what I had.

Range USA has a very poor quality customer service. I think they have incompetent people that respond to customers. I bought membership on 7-20-2022 and on 8-20-2022 they have done something that cancelled my membership without notice to me . I did not cancel my membership , nor I intend to. I am a veteran and have a” basic defender “membership, paid with my credit card set for re-occurring payment and in good standing . I went to the range to pick up a gun I have purchased from their web site and try to use the range to test it and found out I was not having the membership any more with no explanation. the staff advised me to call corporate , telling me that their system has been replaced and they have tremendous IT, website, and communication with their store issues and many customers were affected. I informed corporate about my issue right away asking for reasons , explanations . I have received answers that do not make sense to me and then I called about 5 times and left message with no response Today is 10-26-2022 and they still did not investigate to solve my issue . I was very concerned to know who and why cancelled my membership that created inconvenience for me and concerned about the security of their website on which my credit card is used for payment .Today I received a call back from a very unprofessional lady named “Holly ” that was speaking over me without listening to my concerns. With this level of customer service I will not put up, A very anti customer attitude and lack of knowledge. I would not recommend this company , I do not believe their web site is safe based on what happened to me , and the customer service is useless, aggressive and ignorant . I choose one star because I had to put something , customer service needs aggressive measures to improve . Thank you ! **

I would give them a one star because of the total lack of customer service. They will not respond. Placed order on line and they shipped wrong item. Ive tried making contact on line twice with no response in 3 weeks. They seem customer oriented on the sales floor until you have a problem. Then you get go to WWW .. If I could give a zero I would. I would never recommend them to a friend!!!

I have been an instructor, RSO, handgun competitor, etc. for many years. A few years ago when they opened up I switched from an established range. They had a “blue special” for $9.99/month (retired firefighter/veteran). I hadn’t been up to the range for several months, and several weeks ago went in to the range and was informed that this program had been cancelled for several months (even though they were still billing me) and another “blue special” program had taken it’s place (substantially more with day/time restrictions for use). OK – I get that, but they still keep charging my card for a program that hasn’t existed for months. I received my MC bill today, charge is still on. Website is useless, I called store, employee agreed with that statement and said there was nothing they could do. I told them I would contest the charge (which I did). What’s really sad is that when I told him I was going to do that he stated “that’s what I would do”. This company leaves a lot to be desired, and on a more personal note their safety is an issue as well. I had already made up my mind after this last visit that I was never going back. Their RSO (Range Safety Officer) program is a joke. Their RSOs are more interested in conversation and picking up brass than doing their job – range safety. Cost is not a primary driver here, ethics and safety are. Over and out.

Under the brand under the name Stage Right by Monoprice, the website offers everything from pedals to pedalboards and, you guessed you guessed it: amplifiers.

Monoprice is an online enclave for tech-savvy consumers So it’s not a stretch saying I wondered if their stage Right by Monoprice 30W Tube Guitar Amp Head and 1×12 Cab could be able to live up to the high standards of other popular products. And at less than $600 to purchase the complete package with a stunning sound and above-average construction.

The Stage Right by Monoprice 30-Watt Tube Guitar Amp Head looks overtly nondescript with all-black tolex, save for the triangular-perforated metal faceplate bearing the “SR/Stage Right” branding.

It’s a simple 2 channel amp with a selectable design that has High and Low channels, single Volume and Bright switch for the clean channel, Gain and Overdrive Volume controls on the overdrive channel and a Channel Select switch. Bass, Treble and Middle EQ controls as well as Tone and Reverb controls, as well as Power and Standby switches.

It is powered by 30 watts in power. It comes with a set of power tubes EL-84 and three 12AX7 preamp tubes, with a built-in tube-driven reverb that is powered from one of the preamp tubes and an effects loop in the back of the. The cabinet is equipped with one 12 inch Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. The package includes a two-button footswitch to select channel and the reverb feature, as well as a 1/4 inch TRS audio speaker.

For those who think this is a generic overseas amp, let me let you know that this Stage Right head is an unbelievably fantastic amp. It’s an extremely tuned amp that truly cuts. I was able to find great sound and touch-sensitivity on every volume level (and it can get loud! ).

Channel one has full-sounding cleans, with lots of chime. Channel one can be used fittingly as a pedal platform. Moving to channel two gives plenty of warmth and a little high-end zing which can be controlled and smoothed by using tones control.

With the overdrive knob adjusted, this isn’t a high-pitched or unbalanced crunch instead it’s a full and musical drive that calls for an extra overdrive pedal that can fully complement the overall tone when you push the pedal. The majority of parameter in the amp (like the EQ or reverb) can be calibrated with a moderating effect so that you can easily create a powerful tone.

For example there is built-in reverb that’s little weak, but it won’t hinder your sound, therefore surfers will need to build an additional reverb to their mix, but again, it’s the overly stellar, no-frills sound the amp produces.

1×12 cabs with Celestion V30 sounds great, but I plugged the SR head into other cabs and got more impressive and superior performance. However, as a small rig that just slays? I’m heading over for Stage Right.

  • STREET PRICE: $607
  • Type: Tube amp head and cabinet
  • CHANNELS: 2
  • POWER: 30-watts
  • TUBES:3x 12AX7 in preamp, 4x EL84 power tubes.

A single of the more famous scenes from the film A Christmas Story is, of course Ralphie’s “official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.” This line alone can be heard 30 times in the film. Naturally, the well-loved BB gun is always the most sought-after prop for fans of the movie.

Buy an actual, vintage, 1943 Red Ryder: https://www.ebay.com/itm/155299233518

Up until November of 2015, the prop been removed from A Christmas Story House and Museum’s collection. On display in its place was one of the limited edition Christmas Dream rifles, which was created in 1983 in homage to the real gun used in the film.

Even though Daisy produced six guns that were used in the movie, before then , the Red Ryder version with sundial and compass been invented. Author Gene Shepherd had created this fictional rifle and may have confused the model with that of the Buck Jones rifle that Daisy produced, which does have a compass and sundial. It’s true that Red Ryder just rolls off the tongue with a bit more ease as Buck Jones!

Following the film’s production, the 6 Red Ryder prop rifles were divided among the various team members, one went into film archives and one went to little Ralphie the actor, Peter Billingsley, never to be seen again. That is, until a fan reached out to us with a promising lead!

The fan contacted us with an exact link to a listing from a collectibles company, The Prop Master. They had obtained one of these precious gems, and wanted to purchase it for 10,000 dollars. Through a bit of research and investigation, we discovered that the particular firearm was owned by a gentleman named Gary Meck. Meck was the director of production assets for the movie, was trying to sell the gun he owned as A Christmas Story memorabilia!

The blizzard that hit the state of Colorado in October 1997 was among the most costly and damaging natural disasters in Colorado’s history of big storms. Following an extremely dry summer, the storm shook many Coloradans off guard. The resulting floods and mudslides caused havoc to homes, roads and businesses throughout the state. The storm caused more than $1 billion in damages and killed more than 30 people.

For several days leading up to the storm, a low-pressure system been brewing over the southern part of Colorado. On October 20th the system finally broke out into a full-blown snowstorm. The snow fell heavily across the majority of Colorado early in the morning, and continued throughout the day. After all was done, some areas had received more than 2 feet of snow, while others were covered with several inches of ice.

The most severe impact of the storm hit Denver in Colorado, where the conditions of whiteout made travel virtually impossible. Roads quickly became impassable as abandoned vehicles were piled up in a mess of drifts. Public transportation came to a standstill as buses were stuck in snowbanks and trains lost their way due to ice forming on the tracks. Schools and businesses closed for the day while people stayed at home to get through the storm.

Outside of Denver the situation was more dire. In mountain towns such as Aspen and Vail, heavy snow led to roofs falling over of the snow, while powerful winds ripped down power lines and trees. Communities that were isolated were isolated from assistance because roads were filled with debris, or disappeared under mountains of snow. In the eastern region of Colorado, meanwhile, flash flooding transformed small streams into violent rivers that swept away cars, houses, and even people unlucky enough to cross their route..

All told, it took weeks to allow Colorado to heal from the snowstorm that hit in 1997. For many people who lived through it the experience, however, the memories will remain in their hearts for the rest of their lives.”

Ukraine’s success in its offensive against the Russian invaders did not frighten the country’s allies and friends, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said.

“I think if anyone was surprised, just based on the reports that we’ve seen in terms of the Russian military’s response, it was probably the Russians,” he declared.

Putin is a miserable failure

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced to reporters that Ukrainian military personnel had freed over 2,300 acres of land from Russians. Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian troops are pressing Russian troops northeast of Kharkiv as well as a lot of intruders have fled across line into Russia.

“Certainly, since the beginning of Russia’s invasion into Ukraine, we’ve seen the Ukrainians demonstrate a remarkable adaptability and their ability to use their warfighting capabilities to great effect,” Ryder stated during an Pentagon news conference. “So, it’s not surprising to us that they have pushed as quickly as they have.”

The Ukrainian military also made use of military opportunities that presented themselves on the battlefield. The Kharkiv offensive is proof of this, according to the general.

Western weapons and supplies contributed to the successful counteroffensive and at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Ramstein Air Base, Germany, secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and counterparts from nearly 50 other nations pledged to keep the supply chain moving and to increase the amount of aid that could be applied to mid-term and longer-term Ukrainian security, Ryder said.

Russians unprovoked invasion of Ukraine could be a blow to the global rules-based system which has stopped wars between large powers since the conclusion of World War II.
“Secretary Austin and other U.S. government leaders continue to regularly engage with our Ukrainian counterparts,” Ryder stated in the press meeting. “I think last week’s meeting at Ramstein is a good example of how seriously we’re taking this and that we are constantly engaged in a dialogue to determine what are the needs of our Ukrainian partners, based on the conditions on the ground.”

In the offensive, Ukrainian forces have been using the equipment they have with great success as they’ve altered the dynamic in the battle, the general said. The Ukrainian military also has learned as the conflict has continued. The Ukrainian military has also adopted NATO combat tactics using the use of combined arms in the course of war. The Ukrainian military has been capable of integrating older Soviet-era military gear to use the latest tactics, and beat the Russians. Ukrainian military personnel also studied western equipment like M777 howitzers and HIMARS and drones. They were able to use them with the old systems and incorporate these into the strategies they use.

Spotlight: NATO

“It is just that remarkable adaptability on the battlefield to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that exist to use not only equipment that they’ve already had in their inventory, but the equipment that has been provided to them by the U.S. and other international partners,” Ryder said. “So, it is very evident that they continue to figure out ways to fight.”

The fifth Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting at Ramstein Air Base last week represents a worldwide campaign to aid Ukraine and uphold the order based on rules. Russia is a solitary country. This isolation is exemplified by being the only two countries that have supplied arms for Russia are Iran and North Korea.

The war is not certain, but currently, “Ukraine continues to use the aid provided by the United States and other international partners to great effect on the battlefield in their fight to defend their country,” Ryder said.

When the late historian Sir Ben Pimlott embarked on his 1996 biography, his colleagues expressed surprise that he should consider Queen Elizabeth II worthy of serious study at all. Yet Pimlott’s judgement proved sound and, if few academics have followed his lead, the political role of the monarchy has received thoughtful treatment in the creative arts.

Stephen Frears’s 2006 film, The Queen, showed her dilemma after the death of Princess Diana; Peter Morgan’s stage play The Audience showed the monarch’s weekly meetings with her prime ministers. And she has been shown in a generally positive and sympathetic light by both Netflix’s acclaimed drama series The Crown and even in Mike Bartlett’s speculative play King Charles III, about the difficulty her heir would have in filling her shoes.

Elizabeth’s reign was a delayed result of the abdication crisis of 1936, the defining royal event of the 20th century. Edward VIII’s unexpected abdication thrust his shy, stammering younger brother Albert onto the throne as King George VI. Shortly thereafter he was thrust into the role of figurehead for the nation through the second world war.

The war was the most important formative experience for his elder daughter, Princess Elizabeth. Her experience as a car mechanic with the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service – the women’s army service) meant that she could legitimately claim to have participated in what has been called “the people’s war”.

The experience gave her a more naturally common touch than any of her predecessors had displayed. When, in 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten – who became Duke of Edinburgh (and died in April 2021 at the age of 99) – her wedding was seized on as an opportunity to brighten a national life still in the grip of post-war austerity and rationing.

The Queen seated on a throne with full regalia, surrounded by bishops.

God Save the Queen: Elizabeth II is crowned in Westminster Abbey, June 2 1952.

Elizabeth II inherited a monarchy whose political power had been steadily ebbing away since the 18th century but whose role in the public life of the nation seemed, if anything, to have grown ever more important. Monarchs in the 20th century were expected both to perform ceremonial duties with appropriate gravity and to lighten up enough to share and enjoy the tastes and interests of ordinary people.

The Queen’s elaborate coronation in 1953 achieved a balance of both these roles. The ancient ceremony could be traced to the monarchy’s Saxon origins, while her decision to allow it to be televised brought it into the living rooms of ordinary people with the latest modern technology. Royal ceremonial was henceforth to be democratically visible, ironically becoming much better choreographed and more formal than it had ever been before.

The Queen went on to revolutionise public perceptions of the monarchy when, at the urging of Lord Mountbatten and his son-in-law, the television producer Lord Brabourne, she consented to the 1969 BBC film Royal Family. It was a remarkably intimate portrayal of her home life, showing her at breakfast, having a barbecue at Balmoral and popping down to the local shops.

Prince Charles’s investiture as Prince of Wales the same year, another royal television event, was followed in 1970 by the Queen’s decision during a visit to Australia and New Zealand to break with protocol and mix directly with the crowds who had come out to see her. These “walkabouts” soon became a central part of any royal visit.

The highpoint of the Queen’s mid-reign popularity came with the 1977 Silver Jubilee celebrations, which saw the country festooned in red, white and blue at VE Day-style street parties. It was followed in 1981 by the enormous popularity of the wedding at St Paul’s Cathedral of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer.

Testing times

The following decades proved much more testing. Controversy in the early 1990s about the Queen’s exemption from income tax forced the Crown to change its financial arrangements so it paid like everyone else. Gossip and scandal surrounding the younger royals turned into divorces for Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and – most damagingly of all – Prince Charles. The Queen referred to 1992 – the height of the scandals – as her “annus horribilis”.

The revelations about the misery Princess Diana had endured in her marriage presented the public with a much harder, less sympathetic image of the royal family, which seemed vindicated when the Queen uncharacteristically miscalculated the public mood after Diana’s death in 1997. Her instinct was to follow protocol and precedent, staying at Balmoral and keeping her grandchildren with her.

This seemed hard and uncaring to a public hungry for open displays of emotion that would have been unthinkable in the Queen’s younger days. “Where is our Queen?” demanded The Sun, while the Daily Express called on her to “Show us you care!” insisting that she break with protocol and fly the Union Jack at half-mast over Buckingham Palace. Never since the abdication had the popularity of the monarchy sunk so low.

Caught briefly on the back foot by this remarkable change in British public behaviour, the Queen soon regained the initiative, addressing the nation on television and bowing her head to Diana’s funeral cortege during a cleverly conceived and choreographed televised service.

The extent to which she quickly regained public support was shown by the enormous, if unexpected, success of her 2002 Golden Jubilee, which was ushered in by the extraordinary sight of Brian May performing a guitar solo on the roof of Buckingham Palace. By the time London hosted the Olympics in 2012 she was sufficiently confident of her position to agree to appear in a memorable tongue-in-cheek cameo in the opening ceremony, when she appeared to parachute down into the arena from a helicopter in the company of James Bond.

Political sphere

Queen Elizabeth kept the crown above party politics, but she was always fully engaged with the political world. A firm believer in the Commonwealth, even when her own prime ministers had long lost faith in it, as its head she mediated in disputes between member states and provided support and guidance even to Commonwealth leaders who were strongly opposed to her own UK government.

Her prime ministers often paid tribute to her political wisdom and knowledge. These were the result both of her years of experience and of her diligence in reading state papers. Harold Wilson remarked that to attend the weekly audience unprepared was like being caught at school not having done your homework. It was widely believed that she found relations with Margaret Thatcher difficult.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh sometimes objected to the political use to which governments put them. In 1978 they were unhappy to be forced by the then foreign secretary, David Owen, to receive the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife as guests at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen could act to very positive effect in international relations, often providing the ceremonial and public affirmation of the work of her ministers. She established a good rapport with a string of American presidents, particularly Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama, and her successful 2011 state visit to the Republic of Ireland, in which she astonished her hosts by addressing them in Gaelic, remains a model of the positive impact a state visit can have.

She was even able to put aside her personal feelings about the 1979 murder of Lord Mountbatten to offer a cordial welcome to the former IRA commander Martin McGuinness, when he took office in 2007 as deputy first minister of Northern Ireland.

Only very occasionally and briefly did the Queen allow her own political views to surface. On a visit to the London Stock Exchange after the 2008 financial crash she asked sharply why nobody had seen it coming.

In 2014, her carefully worded appeal to Scots to think carefully about their vote in the Independence Referendum was widely – and clearly rightly – interpreted as an intervention on behalf of the Union. And in the run-up to the 2021 UN COP26 conference in Glasgow, from which she had to pull out on medical advice, she was overheard expressing irritation at the lack of political action on the climate change emergency.

Final years

As she approached her tenth decade, she finally began to slow down, delegating more of her official duties to other members of the royal family – even the annual laying of her wreath at the cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, while in May 2022 she delegated her most important ceremonial duty, the reading of the Speech from the Throne at the State Opening of Parliament, to Prince Charles.

She retained her ability to rise to a crisis, however. In 2020, as the COVID pandemic descended, the Queen, in sharp contrast to her prime minister, addressed the nation from lockdown at Windsor in a calm, well-judged message. Her short address combined solidarity with her people with the reassurance that, in a conscious reference to Vera Lynn’s wartime hit, “We will meet again.”

The decade also brought sadness. Her grandson, Prince Harry, and his wife Meghan Markle withdrew completely from royal duties, causing deep hurt to the royal family. This hurt was compounded when the Sussexes accused the royal family, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey which was watched around the world, of treating them with cruelty, disdain and even racism.

The shock of the interview was followed quickly by the death of Prince Philip, her husband of 73 years, a few months short of his 100th birthday. At his funeral, which was reduced in scale to meet the requirements of COVID regulations, the Queen cut an unusually lonely figure, small, masked and sitting alone. As her health declined in the months following his death, the deep impact of his loss became all too apparent.

The pain of the Sussexes’ estrangement from the royal family was heavily compounded by the disgrace soon afterwards of Prince Andrew, her second and, it was often suggested, her favourite son. His close involvement with the convicted American paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, led to the unedifying spectacle of a senior member of the royal family being accused in an American court of underage sex; he made his own position immeasurably worse by agreeing to a disastrous interview on the BBC current affairs programme Newsnight.

The Queen responded to the scandal with remarkable decisiveness: she stripped her son of all his royal and military titles, including the cherished “HRH”, and reduced him, in effect, to the status of a private citizen. Even her closest family were not to be allowed to undermine all she had done to protect and preserve the monarchy.

The remarkable success of her 2022 Platinum Jubilee was a sign of just how much she had retained the affections of her people; a particularly well-received highlight was a charming cameo performance showing her having tea with the children’s television character, Paddington Bear.

Apart from in dreams, in which she was often popularly supposed to appear, the Queen’s most regular contact with her subjects was in her annual Christmas message on television and radio. This not only reflected her work and engagements over the previous year, but it reaffirmed, with greater frankness and clarity than many of her ministers seemed able to summon, her deeply held Christian faith.

As head of the Church of England she was herself a Christian leader and she never forgot it. The Christmas message adapted over the years to new technology, but it was unchanging in style and content, reflecting the monarchy as she shaped it.

Under Elizabeth II, the British monarchy survived by changing its outward appearance without changing its public role. Republican critics of monarchy had long given up demanding its immediate abolition and accepted that the Queen’s personal popularity rendered their aim impracticable while she was still alive.

Elizabeth II, whose 70-year reign makes her the longest reigning monarch in British history, leaves her successor with a sort of British monarchical republic, in which the proportions of its ingredients of mystique, ceremony, populism and openness have been constantly changed in order to keep it essentially the same. It has long been acknowledged by political leaders and commentators all over the world that the Queen handled her often difficult and delicate constitutional role with grace and remarkable, even formidable, political skill.

Her wisdom and unceasing sense of duty meant she was widely viewed with a combination of respect, esteem, awe and affection, which transcended nations, classes and generations. She was immensely proud of Britain and its people, yet in the end she belonged to the world, and the world will mourn her passing.

The fallout from Jackson Hole continues to ripple through markets, investors have their sights set on even more drama emanating from the central bank. The Federal Reserve this week is planning to increase the pace of its quantitative tightening (QT) program by ramping up the pace at which it restructures its balance sheet. This is a dramatic change of the bond buying program that was triggered by the pandemic that saw central banks nearly double their balance sheets to almost $9T from $4.2T over the past two years.

Bigger picture: QT is a more opaque method of tightening financial conditions. This contrasts with the Fed’s massive rate hikes that have attracted investor attention. The central bank isn’t selling its Treasury holdings, but rather permitting them to mature in order to reduce its balance sheets. After a few months at a slower pace, monthly caps for offloading Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities are scheduled to increase by $60 billion and $35 billion, respectively, compared to the maximum combined rate of $50B last time the Fed cut its balance sheet between 2017 and 2019.

The whole thing is somewhat of a complicated accounting process which involves settlement windows as well as redemption caps but at a more basic level, it reduces the supply of bank reserves and drains funds from the financial system. After the chaos in the repo market caused the abrupt termination of the QT program in the year of 2019 Some precautions were taken including the Standing Repo Facility. The new facility will allow primary dealers to borrow more money from the Fed against high quality collateral. However, it’s important to keep in mind that it might not be enough to end liquidity problems and could hinder Chair Powell’s plans to raise rates and bringing down inflation.
