They were in a position to plan and execute this horrific attack because their Taliban hosts had given them refuge in Afghanistan. Since 2001, no enemy has been able of launching such an attack against our nation. This is a testament to the efforts of the entire U.S government to defend our citizens from terrorist threats from Afghanistan and all over the globe.

We know that this work is far from over. We must maintain a constant focus on counterterrorism . And we are. In the last few weeks, the United States delivered justice to Ayman al-Zawahiri who was the leader of al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden’s deputy at the time of the 9/11 attacks. Our values continue to drive the vital work of American patriots from all over the world. In the face of Russia’s impulsive and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, the United States is providing urgent assistance to Ukraine. As the United States looks back on the past two decades of fighting in Afghanistan I am aware that many people are asking hard questions about the cost of the war and the sacrifices that were made.
